Phil Reed, MPA

Director of Campus Safety; Associate Professor of Criminal Justice

Over the years at Olivet College, Professor Phil Reed has taught criminal investigations, ethical and moral issues, introduction to criminal justice, juvenile delinquency, police and community, defensive tactics and topics in criminology.

Prior to joining Olivet’s faculty full time, he served the Battle Creek Police Department for 25 years, retiring in 2003 as commander of investigations. He helped develop the Calhoun County Cold Case Homicide Team and was responsible for the detective bureau, the undercover narcotics team and the crime lab.

Prof. Reed earned many commendations throughout his career in law enforcement, including recognition by the U.S. Attorney General’s office for working to reduce crimes involving firearms through Operation Safe Neighborhoods.

Prof. Reed earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from Hope College and his law enforcement officer certification from the Kalamazoo Valley Regional Police Academy. He also earned a master’s degree in public administration from Western Michigan University.

Prof. Reed has been honored at Olivet College with the Drs. Gorton and Peggy Riethmiller Award for Excellence in Teaching and Advising, and has twice received the college’s John J. Shipherd Award. Prof. Reed has also been chosen three times – by the graduating seniors of 2006, 2007 and 2012 – to serve as speaker at Baccalaureate.
