Director of Burrage Library; International Students Co-Adviser

Phone: 269-749-7595

Judy Fales is the librarian and director of Burrage Library.  She conducts the library education sessions that guide students in use of the digital databases and the book collection. She is particularly motivated by looks on students’ faces when they use these massive resources and find the information they need.

Judy came to the College in 1992 as the secretary to the Board of Trustees and interim President Gretchen Kreuter, and she remained to work with President Michael Bassis during his entire tenure. After serving in other capacities, she joined the library staff in 2008 and completed her Master of Library Science at North Carolina Central University in 2014.

Judy is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, and a 1976 graduate of the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and public relations. She worked in Washington, D.C., on the staff of a U.S. senator where she met grad student and hotelier Mike Fales ’75, Olivet College’s current director of service learning and campus ministries and assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies, in 1983.

Judy and Mike are the co-advisers for the College’s international students, and Judy has served as an adviser to numerous clubs and organizations on campus. She also co-founded Common Ground, the College’s LGBT+ and allies group, with Professor Laura Barlond-Maas ’88 in 2000.

Judy and Mike have three sons. The oldest, Doug, is a 2013 Olivet College graduate of the journalism and mass communication program. The couple lives on Yale Street in the home previously long occupied by Dr. Ed and Patricia Speare.
