Asheley BrooksSenior Asheley Brooks is a psychology major and will be pursuing a master’s degree in industrial and organizational psychology at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology after she graduates in May. During her time at Olivet, Asheley has been a captain of the cheer team, president of the Black Student Union, a member of the Optimist Club, a fellow of the President’s Leadership Institute, a graduate of the Women’s Leadership Institute, a sister and vice president of Nu Gamma Xi, a student assistant for Student Life and a volunteer as a big sister at the Mid-Michigan Leadership Academy.

As Asheley nears graduation, she recently wrote and presented a poem under the theme why she came to college. The poem was inspired by Asheley’s mother, one of her biggest supporters in life.

She had her at 21
Precious baby girl
Working hard
Giving everything she had
Instilling in her
Is important
Many lectures from grandad
Made it hard
To forget
The importance of it
Through the struggles
And defeat
She made it
Bachelor’s in human services
That wasn’t enough
A young mother
Striving for greatness
She made sure it was clear
This road
Is not easy
Master’s in clinical psychology
Whew chile’
A black women two degrees hot
I wanted to be her
she wants me to be better.
